The 14 Key Pieces You Need for Building the Perfect Cold Weather Wardrobe

If you want to build the perfect fall / winter wardrobe you have to start with the right foundation. To make the task a little easier for you we've compiled a list of what we consider to be the top 14 necessary basics. These classic staples can be easily mixed-and-matched to create a variety of looks that are not only stylish, but comfortable and appropriate for the season as well.

Wool Coat

1. Coat

Choosing the right coat for your fall / winter wardrobe requires striking a perfect balance between style and functionality. There are many shape, style, and colors to choose from so finding a coat that looks great shouldn't be a problem - but finding one that looks great, and keeps you warm may prove a little more challenging. If your need something that is warm look for wool blend coats, down filled puffer coats, man-made synthetic coats (such as Gore-Tex or Thermolite), or fur coats made out of Sable, Mink, or Chinchilla.

Wool Blazer

2. Blazer Coordinate

A well tailored blazer can add instant polish to almost any outfit. For fall / winter we recommend a light-weight wool in a dark color or pattern. Make sure that your jacket fits you comfortably throughout the shoulders, defines your waist, and has sleeves that reach all the way past your wrist bones. You will get the most bang for your buck if you can find a jacket that is also part of a suit set. Suit coordinates make great mix-and-match basics for your wardrobe and can help you to create a wide variety of looks on a minimal budget.
Work Dress

3. Work Dress

Just because it's cold out doesn't mean you can't get dressed up! An office appropriate work dress can make a stylish addition to any wardrobe. Look for styles that have plenty of coverage, knee length hemlines, and tailored details. Depending on your shape you may prefer a close fitting sheath dress, or a looser fitting shift dress. We also recommend work dresses with a sleeveless style because you can change their look more easily; try layering the dress over a pretty collared blouse or pairing it a cute cashmere cardigan, or blazer.
Bootcut Pants

4. Black Bootcut Trouser

A basic black trouser is an absolute must in every woman's wardrobe. Not only does it never go out of style, but it is also consistently flattering, and goes with everything! For fall/winter we recommend a trouser made out of a wrinkle resistant light-weight wool gabardine, in a bootcut style. Other cuts can work as well, but the bootcut style is generally considered the most universally flattering because the flared leg helps balance out a woman's hips. If you don't want to go with a classic black, try navy, or another dark color with a subtle pinstriped pattern.
A-Line Skirt

5. A-Line Skirt

A pretty A-line skirt can make a great addition to any cold weather wardrobe! For fall / winter look for styles that come in heavier materials and have an interesting pattern such as tweed, or herringbone. Play up their texture by wearing your skirts with a chunky sweater, or romantic blouse and finish off the look with your favorite pumps or knee high boots.
Dark Wash Jeans

6. Jeans

Jeans never go out of style, and that's precisely why we love them! For fall / winter look for denim in darker washes. Choose a style that flatters your figure and, because dark denim demands slightly more sophistication, make sure you have your jeans tailored to your ideal inseam. To prevent fading and maintain a dark wash over time turn your jeans inside out when you wash them, or for the best possible results have them dry-cleaned.
Wool Cardigan

7. Cardigan

The best part about winter? Layering; and there's no better way to layer than throwing on a cozy cardigan. More relaxed than jackets, cardigans come in a variety of insulating materials, lengths, and styles. Wear them fitted, open, belted, or shrunken - the possibilities are endless. Look for wool, or high quality cashmeres. Consider the thickness of the yarn (called "Ply") if you are in need of a cardigan that is extra warm.
White Shirt

8. White Shirt

Ahhhh! The sweet smell of starched cotton! That's right, we're talking about the classic collared shirt, and if we had to choose we'd pick a white one. The style is so crisp, clean, and versatile - a girl should never be without one. Wear it to work, layered under sweaters, or for an evening out. Make sure you choose a comfortable fit, and consider that some materials will breathe better than others. If you plan to wear it layered under other pieces opt for a style with some stretch that fits closer to the body - you definitely won't be wanting any extra bulk.
V-Neck Sweater

9. V-Neck Sweater

A V-neck sweaters is flattering on any figure! It opens up the neckline, and draws the attention up towards your face. We love V-Neck sweaters because they are classic, versatile, easy to layer. Look for light weight styles that can wear well under a coat or blazer. For the best insulation opt for wool or cashmere and look for colors that compliment your skin tone.
Leather Tote

10. Leather Tote

A leather tote makes for the perfect winter wardrobe accessory. For work choose a bag with some structure and interesting hardware or detail. On the weekend feel free to go a little more casual with an oversized hobo. Don't be afraid to try out some color as well - you'll be surprised how well a bold yellow, red, green, or orange can work into your wardrobe.
Day Bag

11. Everyday Bag

You need style plus practicality in your daytime companion. If not leather, look for bags that are made out of heavy weight material like double faced wool, velvet, or tweed. Make sure the bag is large enough to carry your essentials, but not so heavy that it weighs you down. Opt for neutral friendly colors like black, gray, brown or red since it is going to be your go to bag and will probably need to work with everything.
Flats

12. Flats

We adore a sophisticated flat for fall! Not only are they super comfortable but they also come in a variety of styles, and include everything from ballerina flats, and pointed-toe styles, to loafers and moccasins. Accenting an outfit with a cute flat is a great way to add a touch of your personal style to any outfit. Make the perfect statement by wearing flats in fun patterns like an animal print, or interesting materials such as satin, velvet, or tweed. For evening try an embellished flat that will add a little extra sparkle to your look.
Boots

13. Knee High Boots

A great knee high boot is probably one of the most important things to have in your fall/winter wardrobe. We recommend a leather boot, with plenty of traction on the bottom, and a comfortable heal. For work a pointed-toe style can adds extra sophistication, but for the weekend we recommend a more casual ridding style.
Black Pumps

14. Black Pumps

Splurge on a classic pair of black pumps. Not only are they perfect for fall / winter, but they also work for evening, and a classic style can carry you through spring as well. Invest in a pair that is both stylish, and comfortable to wear. Make sure that they don't pinch your toes, and that you are able to walk in them on both hard and carpeted surface.
