"Tucked away in a sweet little mews off Lonsdale Road lies a glittering treasure trove of jewels and laces, sequins and chiffon. British designer Alice Temperley gives us a glimpse into her world and her busy Notting Hill studio.
This magpie's utopia is where all the magic happens. Temperley London has grown from humble beginnings into a staggering retail success story. Alice showed her debut collection in London in 2003, and by the time she moved to show in New York, her beautiful dresses were stocked in 150 (and counting!) stores worldwide.
Alice walks us round her bustling studio, jumping from sewing rooms to pattern cutting toiles, shipping and accounts departments. It's pretty mind-boggling considering the whole empire began with Alice printing and sewing dresses herself out of a room in the Metropolitan Hotel. Her designs are sported by some of the most stylish women in the world, including Helena Christensen, Claudia Schiffer, Rosamund Pike and Keira Knightly.
Temperley is renowned for attention to detail and beautiful embellishment. Dresses are scattered with painstakingly hand-sewn beads, hems encrusted with jewels or sequins. Alice completed an MA specializing in fabric technology and print at the Royal College, after graduating from the prestigious Central Saint Martins.
The collection is infused with a combination of urban glamor with a relaxed, countryside vibe, much like the designer herself. Growing up on her parents' cider farm in rural Somerset, Alice has always created and sold things.
"The countryside is a very inspiring place to grow up, because you find avenues for your creativity". The farm was the location for her wedding to Lars Von Bennigsen, with whom she recently had a baby boy Fox London. Alice sees herself moving back to the country and "drawing in a barn" in the not-too-distant future." - T5m.com.
